Hipatia

Hypatia.

Hypatia was born in Alexandria did not know when exactly, but it was assumed that the year was between 355 and 370 and died in March 415. She was the daughter of the mathematician and astronomer Theon who arguably could transmit his passion for these arts. Philosophy teacher was teaching about all the works of Plato and Aristotle. She wrotes books on mathematics and astronomy, improved the design of astrolabes (instruments for determining t6he positions of the stars) and invented a hydrometer. She was beloved and revered in Alexandria, being the highest adviser tribunals in Egypt, especially Orestes who was his student and after converting to Christianity holds office as prefect.

She lived in a time of conflict between Christians and pagans, though she was pagan, did not hesitate to instruct Christians, among them Synesius that over the years he was Bishop of Ptomemais, and they remained good friends until his death two years preceding her.
As Cyril Patriarch of Alexandria (later to become Saint Cyril) the persecution of pagans, Jews and heretics was intesified. Succeeded in expelling the Jews all his possessions being looted, despite attempts to protect Orestes. Many pagans were converted to Christianity but Hypatia did not yield to pressure despite the advice of friens for protection.
Clashes between Cyril and Orestes reached the point where the latter was attacked by a Monju named Ammonium. Ammonium was executed but Cyril buried his corpse in a church with the honor of martyr. That created a complete breakdown of the relationship between Cyril and Orestes and it was possibly triggered the death of Hypatia.
In Lent, Hypatia was captured by a group of fans who blame for the discord between Orestes and Cyril. They dragged her to the cathedral of Alexandria, she was stripped naked and beaten with tiles until she was quartered , then their paraded her body through the city to the Ciraneo where cremated.

Agora

Agora.

The new film from Alejandro Amenabar tells the story of Hypatia (see biography) from the riots that led to the devastation of the Serapeum library until her death. The common thread is the love she professed her student Orestes and Davo, her slave who also wants his freedom. Hypatia sees as her world changes by religious fanaticism. Yet she is still looking for answers to your questions about the movement of the stars. A sad movie full of beautiful pictures of Alexandria and starry skies. A beautiful movie that I recommend seeing.
